Chatbot

A software application that uses AI to understand user messages and generate conversational responses, allowing people to interact with systems or services through natural, human-like dialogue.

Why it matters
Chatbots sit on the public edge of a system, connected to real data and real actions. Every message is user input that must be treated as untrusted, just like a web form field.

English computing compound coined by Michael Mauldin as ChatterBot, from chat (Middle English chatter, idle talk) and bot (clipping of robot, from Czech robota, forced labor)

What changed
Chat had meant idle talk since the 1500s, then computer-mediated talk once chat rooms appeared in the 1980s. Robot entered English in 1920 from Czech robota, forced labor, and computing clipped it to bot for a program that acts without a person. Mauldin coined ChatterBot in 1994; English shortened chatter to chat, dropped the internal capital, and the closed compound became the ordinary name for a conversational program.
