Stall Prevention
Drive response that modifies acceleration, deceleration, or speed to keep current or DC-bus voltage within limits.
The Explain card
- Plain English
- Stall prevention is a family of drive responses that adjust speed, acceleration or deceleration to stay inside current and voltage limits. It keeps the drive running through conditions that would otherwise fault it.
- Example
- A drive decelerates a heavy fan and the bus voltage climbs. Stall prevention stretches the deceleration ramp automatically until the bus falls back, instead of tripping on overvoltage.
- Why it matters
- It is the reason a drive can survive a rough load without a resistor, and it is also why a deceleration that was set to five seconds takes forty. When a machine stops slower than programmed, look here before you look for a fault.
- Hook
- The drive quietly changing your ramps to save itself.
Word knowledge
How the word is built, where it came from, and what it sits beside in memory.
In a sentence
During commissioning, the technician enabled Stall Prevention before starting the fully loaded conveyor from rest.
Why these words
- stall Old English steall, place or standing position names the unwanted operating condition
- prevention Late Latin praeventio, anticipation names the act of forestalling that condition
Where it came from
- Origin
- an English compound formed from stall and prevention
- Entered the language
- 20th century
- What changed
- Stall broadened from a fixed place to stopped motion, while prevention shifted from anticipation toward forestalling an unwanted event; the compound later became specialized drive terminology.
How it is spelled
- Pattern
- Stall retains its final double l.
- Pattern
- The final sound in prevention is spelled -tion.
