RMS
Root-mean-square value used to express the heating-equivalent magnitude of an AC voltage or current.
The Explain card
- Plain English
- RMS is the way AC voltage and current are usually quoted. It is the steady DC value that would produce the same heating, which is why a 480 volt line has peaks near 680 volts.
- Example
- A meter reads 27 amps RMS on a motor lead. The current actually swings between about plus and minus 38 amps, and the 27 is what heats the winding.
- Why it matters
- Drive outputs are chopped waveforms, so a cheap meter that assumes a sine reads them wrong. A true RMS meter is the only kind that tells the truth on a drive output, and even then the reading includes the PWM ripple.
- Hook
- The heating equivalent, which is the number that matters to copper.

In a sentence
During commissioning, the technician compares the VFD input RMS voltage on all three phases before enabling the motor.

Where it came from
- Origin
- English initialism formed from the mathematical compound root-mean-square

- 1895
- What changed
- The phrase began as a mathematical label, entered electrical engineering terminology, and later spread throughout signal measurement.
How it is spelled
- Capitalisation
- Usually written RMS in capitals, even mid-sentence; lowercase rms also occurs in technical notation.
- Plural and possessive
- Use RMS values for the plural and RMS's for the singular possessive.
