Regeneration
Power flow from the rotating motor and load back into the drive DC bus during overhauling or decelerating conditions.
The Explain card
- Plain English
- Regeneration is the motor acting as a generator and pushing power back into the drive. It happens whenever the load is driving the motor rather than the other way around.
- Example
- A crane lowers a load, or a conveyor decelerates a heavy belt faster than friction would. The motor turns faster than the field, current reverses, and the DC bus voltage rises.
- Why it matters
- A plain drive has nowhere to put that energy except the bus capacitors, which fill in a fraction of a second and trip the drive on overvoltage. The fix is a braking chopper and resistor, a regenerative front end, or a longer deceleration ramp.
