Four-Quadrant Operation

Capability to produce motoring and braking torque in both forward and reverse directions.

Plain English
Four quadrant operation means the drive can produce torque in both directions and absorb it in both directions. Motoring forward, braking forward, motoring reverse, braking reverse, all four combinations.
Example
A hoist raises a load under power, then lowers it with the motor holding it back. Both directions, both motoring and braking, so a hoist drive needs all four quadrants and somewhere to send the braking energy.
Why it matters
A drive that can only motor in two quadrants coasts when it should be braking, which on a hoist is a dropped load. Knowing which quadrants the application uses decides whether a chopper, a regenerative unit, or nothing extra is needed.
