Active Front End (AFE)
Controlled rectifier that can regulate the DC bus, reduce line-current distortion, and often return regenerated power to the supply.

- An active front end replaces the diode bridge with IGBTs that are controlled like an inverter running backwards. It draws a nearly sinusoidal current, holds the bus where it wants it, and can push power back to the line.

- AFE solves harmonics and regeneration in one box, which is why it appears on big regenerative loads and in plants with tight utility limits. It costs more, runs warmer and puts a second PWM stage on the line side, which needs its own filtering.
