Fault History
Stored record of recent trips and operating data used to identify recurring causes.
The Explain card
- Plain English
- The fault history is the drive's stored record of recent trips. Each entry carries the fault code and usually the operating data at the moment, such as bus voltage, output current, frequency and time.
- Example
- A drive trips at random, according to the operators. The history shows every trip is an overvoltage, always during a stop, always at the same hour, which is when the next line's load is removed.
- Why it matters
- The history turns a random fault into a pattern, and the data at trip time tells you whether it was the supply, the load or the ramp. Read it before the reset button, because some drives clear it with a power cycle.
- Hook
- The drive's memory of its bad days.
Word knowledge
How the word is built, where it came from, and what it sits beside in memory.
In a sentence
The commissioning technician opened the VFD Fault History and matched each overvoltage entry to the DC bus reading captured at the trip.
Why these words
- fault Old French faute, lack or error identifies the abnormal equipment condition
- history Greek historia, inquiry or knowledge gained by investigation places past occurrences in an ordered diagnostic view
Where it came from
- Origin
- English compound formed from fault and history
- Entered the language
- 20th century
- What changed
- Fault shifted from general deficiency or blame to an equipment abnormality, while history expanded from a narrative of past events to an ordered machine log.
How it is spelled
- Pattern
- fault keeps the -ault spelling found in several English words
- Pattern
- history keeps the histor- base in related forms
- Breaks the pattern
- The au in fault represents one vowel sound rather than two separately pronounced vowels.
