EDS File
Electronic Data Sheet that describes an industrial network device and its configurable attributes.
The Explain card
- Plain English
- An EDS file describes a CIP device to the engineering software. It lists what the device is, what data it exchanges, and which parameters can be set.
- Example
- A new flow meter arrives with an EDS file on the vendor's site. Register it and the device shows up in the I/O tree with its data laid out and its settings editable.
- Why it matters
- Without the file, the software has no idea what the device is and you fall back to generic modules with hand typed sizes. A wrong EDS revision gives you a device that connects and then faults on a size mismatch.
- Hook
- The device's spec sheet, in a format the software reads.
