Dual-Channel Input
Safety input arrangement using two monitored signal paths to improve fault detection.
The Explain card
- Plain English
- A dual channel input reads one safety device through two separate wires and two separate input points. Both channels have to agree for the device to count as clear.
- Example
- A guard door switch has two contacts. Both open when the door opens, and if only one changes the safety controller declares a fault instead of trusting the other.
- Why it matters
- One contact can weld shut, one wire can short to a neighbour, and a single channel would never know. Two channels turn a hidden failure into a detected one, which is most of what a high PL or SIL rating demands.
