Backplane
Internal bus that distributes power and data between modules in a PLC rack or chassis.
The Explain card
- Plain English
- The backplane is the circuit board inside the rack that every module plugs into. It carries power to each slot and moves data between the CPU and the cards.
- Example
- An input card sees a switch close. That bit travels across the backplane to the CPU without any wire you ever landed.
- Why it matters
- Backplane traffic has a bandwidth limit, and a rack full of fast analog cards can crowd it. Backplane faults also look like module faults, so a card that fails in one slot and works in another is telling you about the rack.

- The wiring you never see is the wiring that carries everything.
