Autotune / Motor Identification
Commissioning routine that measures or estimates motor parameters used by the drive's control model.
The Explain card
- Plain English
- Autotune is a commissioning routine in which the drive measures the motor it is connected to. It injects test signals, reads back resistance, inductance and other values, and fills in its motor model.
- Example
- A new drive is wired to a 30 horsepower motor. The technician enters the nameplate data, runs a rotating autotune with the load uncoupled, and the drive learns the motor in about a minute.
- Why it matters
- Vector control is only as good as the model, and the nameplate does not carry everything the model needs. A skipped or static autotune on a motor that could have been spun is the most common reason a vector drive performs like a V/Hz one.
- Hook
- Let the drive meet the motor before it has to run it.
Word knowledge
How the word is built, where it came from, and what it sits beside in memory.
In a sentence
Run Autotune after entering the induction motor nameplate data and before testing the variable frequency drive under load.
How it is built
- auto- combining form self or automatic
- tune base adjust for proper operation
Where it came from
- Origin
- Modern English technical coinage from auto-, ultimately Greek autos, meaning self, and English tune
- Entered the language
- 20th century
- What changed
- Tune broadened from musical adjustment to equipment calibration, while auto- marked the adjustment as automatically performed.
How it is spelled
- Pattern
- The final vowel of auto- is retained before the consonant in tune.
- Pattern
- The two elements form a closed compound written as one word.
- Breaks the pattern
- Technical documentation also uses the variants auto-tune and auto tune.
