Social impact is the principle that AI should be designed, developed and used to benefit individuals and society, while actively identifying, minimizing and managing harmful consequences.
Example
A company building an AI-powered recruiting tool runs an impact assessment before launch: who could be excluded, how errors would affect candidates, and what remedy exists for someone wrongly rejected.
Why it matters
Harms that land on users and communities come back as legal exposure, lost trust and regulatory attention. Assessing social impact early is cheaper than remediating it later, and it often surfaces misuse cases defenders would otherwise miss.

What changed
Social entered English in the 1500s from Latin socialis, first of companionship, later of a whole people. Impact named a physical collision from 1781, then a strong effect even without contact. Policy writers of the 1960s joined the pair for the mark a project leaves on a community, and AI review rooms later put the same two words on the launch checklist.
