Firmware

Vendor-supplied embedded software that defines controller or module behavior and compatibility.

Plain English: Firmware is the vendor's own software living inside the controller, the module, or the drive. It defines what the hardware can do and which project files, parameters and tools it will accept.
Example: A replacement CPU arrives with newer firmware than the project was written for. The software refuses to download until the project is converted or the firmware is flashed to match.
Why it matters: A firmware revision changes behaviour, fixes bugs, adds parameters on a drive and sometimes breaks compatibility with a tool that worked last week. Record the revision of every device on the drawing, and never update firmware on a running line without a rollback plan.
