Default Gateway
Router address used to reach devices outside the local IP subnet.

- The default gateway is the router a device sends traffic to when the destination is outside its own subnet. A device with no gateway can only talk to its neighbours.
- Example
- A PLC on the machine network needs to reach a historian on the office network. Its gateway is the plant router, and without that setting the packets never leave the cell.
- Why it matters
- Most machine devices never need a gateway, and setting one that does not exist adds a delay to every misaddressed packet. When a device can ping its neighbours and nothing else, the gateway is the setting to check.
