Watermarking
In data protection, methods and technologies that apply a unique anti-tamper signature or message to a copy of a document.
The Explain card
- Plain English
- Watermarking is the set of methods that apply a unique, tamper-resistant signature or message to a copy of a document, so you can prove its origin and spot whether it has been altered or leaked.
- Example
- Each copy of a proprietary training dataset shared with partners carries a slightly different hidden signature. When a copy turns up online, the signature reveals which partner leaked it.
- Why it matters
- Data and model artefacts are valuable and easy to copy. Watermarking gives defenders provenance and attribution, and deters insiders who know every copy is traceable.
- Hook
- Invisible ink that names the recipient.
